Q Ocean Express builds catamarans in three different categories: Fishing, Sport and Poker Run. How do these boats compare to each other?
A

First, we build only catamarans. They are planing hulls and we manufacture every catamaran to the same "standard of excellence" using skilled labor and high-tech materials. This is what the categories have in common with each other.

For many years, Ocean Express was known primarily as a manufacturer of high performance "offshore race catamarans". Several years ago, our customers asked us to make catamarans that could be used for general recreational boating. We now manufacture Fishing, Sport and Poker Run models. Each category provides the owner with a different experience.

Fishing Catamarans are designed for the serious minded sport fisherman. The Fishing Catamarans are loaded with special features for fishermen. Fishing catamarans are offered in four different platforms: 25', 32', 34', and 36'.

Sport Catamarans are designed for people looking for both high performance and an all around "fun day boat". Our Sport Catamarans have a large cockpit and a finished cabin with an enclosed head.

Poker Run Catamarans are built for speed. The deck is designed similar to an "offshore race catamaran" and the vessels are rigged for poker run competition. Our typical Poker Run Catamaran has an unfinished cabin (to reduce the overall weight) and is offered with different engine configurations.

Q Why should I consider buying a catamaran instead of a mono hull?
A

The catamaran has several distinct advantages. Catamarans are wider and more stable. A catamaran has two hulls connected by a tunnel. When the boat is "running", the tunnel traps air beneath the boat in the void, leaving a cushion of air to ride on (sort of like a "magic carpet ride").

Q What about fuel economy and range?
A A catamaran's fuel economy, measured miles/gallon, is up to 35 to 40 percent better than a similar length mono-hull vessel.  This is because a catamaran rides on top of the water, (on plane with less of its hull in the water and less hull pushing through the water).  This is easily illustrated by comparing the size of the wake for each hull style (catamaran vs mono-hull).  Catamarans also "trap" air under the tunnel which helps to give the boat lift.  Both of these features make catamarans more fuel efficient and extends the boat's range.

Q How long does it take to build a custom catamaran?
A Ocean Express builds only custom catamarans with dual multi-stepped hulls.  It takes approximately three months to build one of our "cats".  Our planing hulls are manufactured with high-tech resins, double biaxial unidirectional materials, and engineered cores – balsa and honeycomb.

Q Why should I buy a custom built catamaran from Ocean Express?
A You get a superior product and a better value for your "boating dollar".  You have direct contact with Ocean Express as your boat is being built.  You can watch your boat being built, starting with the hull right through the rigging process. Because of the level of communication, many of our customers feel like they are part of the OE build team.  Secondly, customers have the opportunity to request that special features be built into their catamaran.  We also invite customers to visit our facility while their boat is being built.  Customer's from as far away as China, Australia and England have come to visit our facility and see first hand the construction of their catamaran.  This is a unique opportunity. When your catamaran is delivered, you will truly feel like it is “your boat” – not the typical "cookie cutter assembly line unit".

Q What makes Ocean Express boats better than other "cats"?
A Ross E. Focht, founder/designer of Ocean Express Powerboats, built the first "composite" high performance offshore power catamaran in the United States.  He introduced new and innovative building materials to the catamaran industry.  That was over 30 years ago. Most other catamarans are semi-displacement hulls. Ocean Express hulls are planing hulls.  We mastered the technology of planing hulls and then went on to win several "World Championships".  Today, we sell a full line of catamarans: fishing, sport, and poker-run.  All of our catamarans are fast, strong and steady.  They are built with the same passion and dedication to excellence as our very first race catamarans.  Your new catamaran will be built with multiple step hulls, high-tech laminate schedules, and surface piercing technology.

Q I know catamarans are fast, but do catamarans make good fishing boats?
A Speed and fuel efficiency are not liabilities in a fishing boat.  Our catamarans also provide a generous aft cockpit and huge storage compartments. The shallow draft of our catamaran design will also allow you to access areas that a similar size mono hull boat can not enter. Even our 36' Sport Fisherman drafts only 24 inches!  Furthermore, catamarans are very stable with a reduced side-to-side roll.

Q Why are O.E. catamarans faster than mono-hull boats?
A At Ocean Express, we have over 30 years of experience in the design and building of custom offshore catamarans.  When we started the company, we built only high performance offshore catamarans. We now build a full range of fishing, sport and poker run style boats.  Today, all of our catamarans benefit from our legacy as a manufacturer of competition catamarans.  Our surface piercing technology, double bias unidirectional materials, and advanced hull designs, create catamarans with speed advantages of up to 30 MPH plus over our mono hull competitors with similar power configurations.  You don't necessarily need to go fast.  However, if you have the "power" and cruise at moderate speeds then you will extend the duty cycle of your equipment.  It's also nice to know that if you need to go fast, you have the speed!

Q Why don't you sell your boats through a dealer network?
A

Dealers do a great job at what they are paid to do, sell boats.  They need to mark-up the cost of the boat 35% or more to make a profit and cover their business expenses.  Dealers do not add value to the construction of the boat and are not often very helpful when it comes to providing service for the boat.  Dealers are more likely to say, "We need to talk to the manufacturer", instead of saying , "We will take care of that for you".  At Ocean Express, we like to think that we can put the "dealer's 35%" into your catamaran!  Even though we are a low volume custom boat builder, our catamarans are competitively priced.

At Ocean Express, we sell directly to customers who are looking for a superior product and an exceptional value.  When you buy an Ocean Express catamaran, you will be dealing directly with the manufacturer.  There is no "middle man" who is interested in selling a new boat to someone else rather than helping you with your concerns.

Q If I buy an Ocean Express catamaran, can I pick my interior?
A Ocean Express builds custom boats.  Many companies claim to build custom boats but really sell a limited or full production boat to customers who have no significant say on how their boat is finished.  This is not the case at Ocean Express. Your boat is truly a custom boat, built just for you.  You can have the boat rigged and finished to your specifications.  We invite you to come into our facility, meet with our design group and select the different elements that go into completing the design process. This gives you an opportunity to put your "signature" on the boat!

Q What about graphics, can I pick a design and color scheme?
A We provide different design packages but you can submit your own design.  Our talented craftsmen have the ability to create almost any type of high impact graphics for your catamaran.  Some of our customers start by sending us a sketch or just some notes on a napkin.  We take your ideas and create a color rendering of the graphics.  You will need to approve the design before we can complete the process.  Your catamaran is truly custom built, just for you.

Q What is surface piercing technology?
A Surface piercing technology is a design concept based on the relationship between the relative position of the prop and the bottom of the hull.  Most other boat builders position their props 8" to 12" below the boat's bottom.  Ocean Express positions their props flush at the bottom of the hull.  This is known as a high "x-dimension".  There are two significant benefits associated with a high "x-dimension".  First, we create less prop drag.  Secondly, we reduce the stress on the power unit's lower unit.  There are special technical challenges associated with using a high x-dimension.  The boat must be perfectly balanced, the hull must have specially designed "notches" along the leading edges, and you need to use a high quality stainless steel 4-blade "surfacing piercing" propeller.

Q Your catamarans are built with fiberglass but your t-tops on the center consoles have tubular aluminum frames covered with Sunbrella fabric. Why don't you use a fiberglass hard top?
A The simple one word answer is "weight".  Aluminum framing with Sunbrella fabric is lighter and allows us to keep the center of gravity lower. This improves the stability of the boat.  Furthermore, since Sunbrella is available in a wide range of colors, it gives our customers an opportunity to add another element of color to their boat.

Q What about speed?
A Ocean Express catamarans are fast.  We started building offshore catamarans over 30 years ago because we had a passion for fast boats. That passion drove us to win several "World Championship".  And what was true 30 years ago is still true today.  If you want maximum speed and minimum "chop", then you need a catamaran.  Some will tell you that Ocean Express is a more "mellow company" today.  We now build high performance fishing boats, sport boats and poker run boats.  However, we still have the same passion for quality, performance, and speed.  With an Ocean Express catamaran, you will experience up to 15 to 20 MPH advantage over other semi-displacement hull catamarans and an even greater advantage over other mono hull boats.  These benefits translate into better duty cycles on the drive line as well as superior fuel economy.

Q Why do you have monster size scoops on the Poker Run boats?
A To maximize the combustion of the fuel, the fuel needs to be "atomized" with oxygen before it is ignited.  The more oxygen you have, the bigger the "bang" and the better the horse power.  Our monster air scoops are designed to supply the engine room with plenty of ventilation.

Q Why build a boat with a Pilot House?
A

Our customers told us that they wanted a boat designed for extreme weather conditions. They wanted a boat that would be just as comfortable to use on either a brutally hot summer day or a cold bone chilling fall afternoon.  So we decided that a high performance fishing boat with a pilot house configuration was the logical solution.  The pilot house provides total protection from the weather and complete climate control, A/C and heat.  We are just completing tests on the prototype 34' Pilot House Spot Fisherman and the "buzz" has been extremely positive.  We believe that there is a market for this type of catamaran which extends from the sunny shores of Florida to the cold coastal breezes of Alaska.
